We all aim to live happy, healthy, purposeful lives. Yet, sometimes, it seems complicated to discover and then apply purpose to our crazy, busy world.
A few years back, I significantly changed my life to refocus my energies and discover my true happiness and purpose. I ventured into many areas of interest, and while each was beneficial, none were genuinely purposeful to me.
During each venture, I continued my self-discovery and analysis of what moved me, asking whether it fed my soul or fought my purpose. Asking this question helped to refocus my energy, and then everything shifted. My happiness, purpose, calmness, flexibility, curiosity, and "breeziness" (says my husband), my reasons—everything—was impacted in a good way.
The shift impacted every part of my life to the point of seeing the world differently.
I'm no longer hung up on perfection.
I'm no longer hung up on the right and left of politics.
I'm no longer setting or worrying about expectations of myself, people, or events.
This alone is liberating! How did this happen? Through discovery, self-reflection, action, and living purposefully!
If you are truly longing to make 2025 your year of discovery and purpose, here are steps to make it happen:
Step 1
Ikigai! This is the Japanese secret to a long and happy life. It is also known as "reason for being" or clarity in your life. This secret is like a compass that guides you towards work that aligns with your values. Discovering your Ikigai has many benefits, including increased happiness, fulfillment, motivation, health, and personal growth.
Start by identifying the following:
What are you good at (skills, vocation)? Write out your unique skill sets and the things that come easily to you. What are your strengths and your unique offerings?
What do you love to do? Interests, hobbies, and the things that make you lose track of time when immersed in them. Consider what gets you out of bed in the morning. What drives you? What makes your heart race?
What skills and strengths do you naturally excel at that may lead to a profession?
What does the world need (your mission)? Recognize the needs of the world that matter to you. What problems or challenges do you care about solving, and how can your passion and vocation support you in solving them?
Whatever time you can, journal about this clarity and reflect on what you love, your passion(s), creativity, dreams, inspirations, loved ones, work, and the world.
Ikigai helps you understand what truly matters to you. Once you identify this, your life purpose can flourish.
Step 2
Apply these golden rules as often as possible in your daily, weekly, and monthly practice:
Give thanks
Follow your Ikigai
Reconnect with nature
Surround yourself with positive people and positivity
Be intentional with your time to enjoy life’s journey more
Step 3
Take action towards success. Work on things that align with your mind, body, and soul—essentially aligning your life with your work and Ikigai. Your energy becomes electric when you pursue what brings you joy and fills you with excitement and inspiration.
Know that you control and design the life you love. You can craft a business that supports you and your dreams. You can build a community, lead your friends or family, or empower someone who shares your values. Create content that lights you up.
These steps will help clarify your purpose and help you design and build a life that truly serves you and the world, benefiting from all you share.
When your life brings you joy and purpose, you will know the true meaning of happiness.
